Microbiology Class Pictures

Preparing cultures. What is dirtiest? Money, cough, hands, fingernails, air, nose, lips, cell phone, or door handles and faucets? lips. hands down. nasty. repulsive.
Seeing how much staphylococcus my nose is growing.
It kind of tickles.
Who's nose grows more staph? Unfortunately, mine.... But I think it is because I am sick.
Making media. Mmm... agar.

Microbiology

I am living in a world of microbes.
I am dreaming about microbes. every night.
I am studying about microbes morning, noon, and night.
I am going to Microbiology class four hours every day.
I am surrounded by microbes.

And yet I don't reach for germ-x yet.

Wondering if I will.

Nicaragua Pictures

I am back from Nicaragua! Instead of writing medication administration instruction in Miskitu, you can find me writing in my Microbiology notes or writing a paper... But before I got too busy with school, I wanted to at least post a few pictures.
This is our team and this is how we rode through the jungle and into the different villages to set up clinic. We had Gerson (5th year med student in Leone, Nicaragua), Kathilee (BSN, RN, going into NP maybe), and Me (Nursing student).
This is a patient and her sick baby having a consult with Kathilee and Gerson.
Here I am cleaning up an abscess.
My first encounter with Mountain Leprosy (caused by sand fly)- here is Kathilee cleaning it up.
The morning after our big earthquake (around a 5), there was a tropical storm.
Teaching a health class to the community on the importance of water and water purification. Two very big issues in the area.
Theoretically we could send and receive email through this computer/ham radio/computer conversion system. I am still not impressed. My emails never went through and we only received one junk email:)
Visiting a cathedral
Just kidding mom!
Kathilee and I on our way to Ti Kiamp for our first mobile clinic.
Learning the ropes of a pharmacist at the clinic.
Sweet little village girl. She would call out to us as we passed by: "Merike! Merike!" that is: "American! American!"
Getting ready to climb under my mosquito net that kept me safe from not only mosquitoes, but vampire bats, cockroaches, tarantulas, and who knows what else!

Nicaragua

Currently I am sitting in a warm interent cafe. The walls are pink and appears that a toddler got a hold of some crayons and markers and added decor to the walls. The attendant is listening to spanish rap music.

Today I went to Leon with Kathilee and Gerson- we had a good time. We visited his med. university and the hospital that he does rotations in. That is something I will never forget! I don´t have time to describe it right now... but let me just say that I am thankful, oh so thankful that I am not a nurse in that hospital. But let me also say that I wish that I could be a nurse there just because there is such a need. People in the hall ways... dirty... pigeons...

Tomorrow morning I will take a small plane to the coast where we will start being at the clinic and the rest of the trip.

Keep me in your prayers.

Thank you!
